Episode # 17 – Copenhagen Best City For Cyclists, Evening Cycling, Cycle Tours, Danes Love To Cycle, Free Bikes

In Episode # 17 we decided to extend our Odense special edition on the cycling in Denmark and go from A to Z in terms of cycling in the country. First, we tell you a "Did you know" fact or a goal really that the City of Copenhagen sets for itself. Last time (in Odense) we did not provide you any tips for cycling in the evening. This time, we thought it would be necessary to provide valuable cycling tips for evenings as winter is approaching and the days get shorter.

Then, Katie talks about the bike tours as a big part of the Danish culture and while you are here, it is something any foreigner should experience - no doubt. In the meantime, Liyuan goes out "in the trenches" to interview Danes in motion and ask them if they bike every day, where they bike and why they do it on a daily basis. Liyuan also tries to "drill" into those experienced Danes and ask them to provide useful tips to someone who just arrived to Copenhagen or any other city in Denmark. As for the fun things to do in Denmark on the bike, Katie explores the city bikes in Copenhagen, gets a ride with a cycle taxi thus demonstrating what you can do too and tells you a little bit more about where you can rent a bike if you don't have one yet. All that in Episode # 17 of MyDenmarkTV

Considering the fact that only 15% of Danes wear those cycle helmets, you should have shown a more balanced selection of people on the streets instead. The EU, the European Cyclists Federation and cyclist unions in many European countries warn against promoting helmets as it has been shown to scare cyclists off their bikes. You’re doing a good job, except for your safety fetish.

Be sure to promote helmets for motorists and pedestrians as they have a higher risk of head injuries than cyclists. :-) Seriously.

Hi Elle thanks for your comment. The cyclists who we questioned were chosen more on their willingness to stop and chat to us, not who was wearing a helmet or not. And you can clearly see in the background all the non-helmet cyclists whizzing past :)

Our show is based on our own experience of Denmark to give viewers an idea of what it’s like here. My first year here, a friend was run down by a car and saved from brain damage by wearing a helmet.

But if people are scared off by them then that’s their personal choice. I also know a lot of girls (and guys) who choose not to wear a helmet because it will mess up their hair!

We don’t see it as our position to lecture, but just to get the information out there.

In the same way if we did an episode on driving, we would recognise that while many people choose not to wear seatbelts, we would recommend the safer option of buckling up.
